Es Ley!
Es Ley!, 2021. Digital Drawing.
The feminist Green Wave in Latin America has been an inspiration for me whether it is the feminist militants in Mexico or the global feminist anthem by Las Tesis, “Un Violador En Tu Camino”. The Green Wave has become a powerful political force. It is this reason that on Dec 30, 2020 when the Argentinian senate voted to legalize abortion I wanted to do a celebratory piece in solidarity with the feminists who have fought so hard for years to make what once was out of reach possible. I chose vibrant colors and feminist militants who are poised in a way to indicate what they have accomplished but are looking ahead to continuing the force of the Green Wave.
Mujeres En La Lucha, 2016. Watercolor, ink pen.
2016 was a particularly rough year within the US in terms of feminism, it was the election year of former President Trump who among other things, was exposed for sexually assaulting women and boasting about it. As a result, I felt it was important to paint what I felt was needed at time, a united feminist front that represents those who are often the most vulnerable, Black and Brown women of color. I wanted to use vibrant colors to position the women as a militant force but nevertheless a welcoming one, the moon phases at the bottom symbolize their power as a force and to show that women are always present in the struggle.
