Recovering Radical Tejas: Mexican revolutionaries against settler-colonial capitalism

Racist populations have lived in Texas (or Tejas as it was originally named when part of Mexico) since the onset of Spanish colonization, only to escalate in intensity during Anglo colonization. This reality has indisputably remained the unfortunate reality for non-white Texans. The state continues to be controlled and dominated by a very reactionary minority of people whose actions reverberate across the country. I would argue that Texas is now the vanguard of the settler colonial project. This reality is not new but a continuity from the period studied in this project. The goal is to demonstrate that a radical alternative has been imagined, debated, and that many people have been moved to action for this better world for over a hundred years regardless of the state’s hostility.

Under Siege: why socialists must fight for Palestine and BDS

The struggle for Palestinian liberation from Israel’s U.S.-backed settler-colonial regime has become a cornerstone of most radical and progressive political platforms. Especially since Palestinian Civil Society launched the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions campaign (BDS) in 2004, modeled closely on the South African campaign to end Apartheid; the broad U.S. and global Left have made the struggle to end Israel’s occupation part of a wider critique of U.S. imperialism.

Yet recent events have challenged the unity and momentum of both the struggle for Palestinian liberation on the Left, and its primary global weapon, the BDS campaign. One of those challenges has come from the reformist wing of the Left, the Democratic Socialists of America. Another, even more potentially threatening to Palestinian liberation unity, has come from within the ranks of the U.S. Arab political class and its institutions.

The Path to Socialism Requires Border Abolition

Although the Biden administration has attempted to differentiate its immigration policies from those of Donald Trump, the end result has been the same: deportations, abuse and negligence of children jailed in detention centers and refugees turned away at the border. What’s more, Biden’s refusal to allow in the refugees at the border has contributed to horrific human rights abuses. As Reuters reported, nearly 3,300 migrants stranded in Mexico have been kidnapped, raped, trafficked or assaulted since Joe Biden took office on January 20.

Guatemala: We’re hurting for 56, we’re missing 41

March 8 is a key date for the feminist movement in different parts of the world. In Guatemala, in addition to the demands against machista violence and to expand reproductive rights, there is also the demand for justice for the 56 adolescents and girls of the massacre at Hogar Seguro. “On March 8, 2017, the State of Guatemala is going to commit a violent and feminicidal act against 56 girls who were seeking to escape from the Hogar Seguro Virgen de la Asunción, where they were enduring abuse and demanding rights to recreation, food and education” explains Lorena Cabnal, defender of the Red de Sanadoras Ancestrales del Feminismo Comunitario Territorial (Network of Ancestral Healers of Territorial Community Feminism).

From Palestine to Mexico, border walls have got to go!

“From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free!” is more than a slogan, it’s the call of a liberation movement. The Palestinian struggle for liberation is international and the fight for socialism begins when we unite to fight imperialism, colonialism and capitalism. The anthology Palestine: A Socialist Introduction published by Haymarket Books, gives us an overview of the possibilities of a better world, starting with Palestinian liberation. Editors Sumaya Awad and brian bean (brian bean is written in lowercase) offer us a succinct historical background of Palestinian liberation and an internationalist framework of socialism from below through which we can view this struggle.

¡Liberen a Susana Prieto Terrazas AHORA!

Free Susana Prieto Terrazas NOW!

On Monday, June 8th, the lawyer and labor leader Susana Prieto Terrazas was detained and arrested in Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico by the Tamaulipas State Police. The city of Matamoros is located along the Texas-Mexico border directly across from Brownsville, Texas. She is being falsely accused of “attacks against public servants, riots and threat and coercion of individuals” by the Attorney General of the State of Tamaulipas. She is really being targeted for organizing maquiladora workers and challenging the corrupt and venal “charro” unions that work with state and federal officials to repress the new worker’s movement in Mexico.

COVID-19 and Imperialism: the coming disaster and revolt

As the coronavirus spreads across the globe, the impact is winding its way through the hierarchical channels of the global capitalist system. As the richer nations approach the apex of the first wave of the infection, the pandemic is just hitting the poorer nations. The combined catastrophe of mass-infection and economic collapse is going to be more destructive and the effects longer-lasting in societies historically under-developed by imperialism. This refers to the internationalization of the capitalist system by the dominant economic powers, who then divide (and re-divide) and economically exploit other nations through the institutions of neoliberal capitalism.

Lessons from the coup in Bolivia

What is happening in Bolivia is a coup d’état by the racist, right-wing, and fascist forces
of the country. These are forces that are working to facilitate the attempts of the Anglo-
American imperialists to exploit Bolivia’s resources.

This coup is a threat to the peasants, workers, poor, women, and indigenous people of
Bolivia. It is an undisputed fact that the social programs implemented by the government of Evo
Morales have improved the lives of these people. For example, it has greatly decreased the
percentage of people that live in poverty, it has diminished the level of economic inequality, it
introduced the teleférico public transit system in La Paz, it has built new roads, and it has given
economic aid to the most vulnerable sectors of society.
