#TenantStories: Guadalupe’s Testimonio

Guadalupe’s eyes had been on her cup of coffee for a while, but her mind wandered elsewhere, away from the rising aromatic steam. Like every day, her main concern was finding a permanent job, one where you don’t feel adrift and always wonder how you’re going to pay the rent. That constant anguish was overwhelming and exhausting, and sometimes that same anxiety led her to depression, but Guadalupe knew that she could not give up or lock herself in her house to suffer her misery, her children needed food and a roof.

Empire at Ground Zero in Ukraine

The Russian invasion of Ukraine and the quickening of a regionwide war assemblage presents itself in classical Euro-Atlantic form as the dress rehearsal for the next world war. The incessant building up of the stage and setting that counters the rival imperial houses, the alignment or realignments of supporting actors and bit players, and the clichéd tonalities of righteousness and evil; all giving way to the thunderous violence of death and destruction in an enlarging war theater.

Recovering Radical Tejas: Mexican revolutionaries against settler-colonial capitalism

Racist populations have lived in Texas (or Tejas as it was originally named when part of Mexico) since the onset of Spanish colonization, only to escalate in intensity during Anglo colonization. This reality has indisputably remained the unfortunate reality for non-white Texans. The state continues to be controlled and dominated by a very reactionary minority of people whose actions reverberate across the country. I would argue that Texas is now the vanguard of the settler colonial project. This reality is not new but a continuity from the period studied in this project. The goal is to demonstrate that a radical alternative has been imagined, debated, and that many people have been moved to action for this better world for over a hundred years regardless of the state’s hostility.

The Path to Socialism Requires Border Abolition

Although the Biden administration has attempted to differentiate its immigration policies from those of Donald Trump, the end result has been the same: deportations, abuse and negligence of children jailed in detention centers and refugees turned away at the border. What’s more, Biden’s refusal to allow in the refugees at the border has contributed to horrific human rights abuses. As Reuters reported, nearly 3,300 migrants stranded in Mexico have been kidnapped, raped, trafficked or assaulted since Joe Biden took office on January 20.

Eyewitness to Kids in Cages

In the beginning of March, I traveled to my birthplace of Dallas, Tejas. I made the difficult decision to travel and visit family after two years. I have always possessed conflicting feelings about what returning “home” means to me. In a state that historically was part of México and tries to erase this fact. On land historically belonging to indigenous people that was stolen. I am reminded of the quote, “We didn’t cross the border, the border crossed us.” Yet, the racist politicians in power fight to keep those who have been forced to migrate due to U.S. imperialist invention from seeking refuge. As immigrants and Xicanos being told and made to feel that we do not belong. A state that loves our “culture” but in the same vein demands that we only speak English.

AMLO’s MORENA at a crossroads as Mexico heads towards midterm elections

As Mexico heads towards midterm elections, it’s a key moment to analyze the trajectory of Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) and his political party, the Movement for National Regeneration (Morena). While there was mass euphoria after his triumph against the traditional PRI-PAN dictatorship in 2018, three years into his mandate, the limits and betrayals of his political project are in full view.

Biden’s immigration proposal: a path to nowhere

The election of Joe Biden and the return of Democratic Party control of Congress has raised hope that Trump’s disastrous immigration policies could be undone. Separated and incarcerated families long to be reunited and freed, refugees blocked into deadly camps at the border wait for legal channels to be reopened, undocumented workers cut out of pandemic relief efforts endure dangerous working conditions and economic devastation, and all Trump’s other orders designed to be cruel and inhumane urgently need to be reversed.
