AMLO

Claudia Sheinbaum and Morena serve capital and empire—not the working class

In order to analyze what a Claudia Sheinbaum presidency would mean for working class people, we have to look at Claudia as an individual politician and also see that her term in office will be a continuation of AMLO’s legacy and the Morena party platform.

Is Claudia a well-intentioned person or not, isn’t what I consider important when the person’s job is to govern over an extremely unequal society. Ammerman mentions that Claudia is a scientist and not a career politician. As mayor of Mexico City, she instituted environmental policies such as separating garbage and measures to decrease pollution. While, as Ammerman points out, she did oversee the creation of a new metro line, linea 12, it was so poorly constructed that a portion of track collapsed on May 3, 2021, killing 27 and seriously injuring 79 people.

Cutting corners and choosing which companies will win major civil contracts isn’t political party-specific, it’s part of the job of running Mexico City (and Mexico). Speaking of the interests of working and indigenous people while appeasing the wealthy is a skill AMLO and Morena has mastered.

Claudia Sheinbaum and MORENA: A Socialist Analysis

Imagine a Mexico where the gap between the rich and the poor diminishes, where everyone has access to quality education and healthcare, and where the environment is protected. That is the vision of Claudia Sheinbaum, the woman leading the race to become the next president of Mexico. She is not your typical politician. A scientist by training with a Ph.D. in energy engineering, Sheinbaum is not only passionate about her country; she has the brains and experience to back that up. She served as mayor of Mexico City for five years, tackling tough issues such as inequality, crime, and pollution. Her story is inspiring. Born in Mexico City in 1962, Sheinbaum comes from a family of activists who fought for democracy and social justice during the historic student movement of 1968

To end racism and change the world, we need to burn down the past

The white base of a statue. Two men on the base. One of them pushes the other one. The man who is pushing is wearing a white shirt, a little bit stained, probably because of work in the fields. In his left hand he is holding and leaning on a sledgehammer. His skin is dark, brown, he wears a cap, and his right hand is fully extended, with a gesture of contempt and pride toward the other man whom he has toppled.

The Anti-Migrant International

In early December of 2017 the Trump Administration officially withdrew the United States from the UN Global Pact on Migration, claiming the 2016 accord “undermine[s] the sovereign right of the United States to enforce our immigration laws and secure our borders.” The aligned governments of Israel, Hungary, Poland, Australia, Austria, and several other countries followed suit in withdrawing their support, or by publicly repudiating the agreement. Rightwing parties in Germany, France, Italy and Denmark also vocalized their opposition, pledging to withdraw once in power.

The women’s movement reverberates across Mexico

Once again, the women’s movement has been making headlines across Mexico. This time after a militant protest shocked the media and the political establishment. On August 12, images of angry women destroying the glass windows of a police station were broadcast by mainstream media outlets and shared widely on social media. The media sought to sensationalize the protests and to mobilize public opinion against an insurgent feminist movement.

The protests came about after a series of reports which accused police officers of raping a teenage woman in the Azcapotzalco neighborhood of Mexico City. Upon hearing of this police rape, many other cases came to light and feminist collectives called for a national day of protest which took place on August 15. The protest resonated across Mexico and saw demonstrations and actions in large and small cities outside the capital.

The protesters were even more enraged after the new Morenista mayor of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, called the women provocateurs arguing that their actions sought to provoke the use of force by the police. However, the popular indignation in the movement, and the large protest on the 15 of August forced Sheinbaum to apologize to the women’s collectives and forced the city government to publicly re- commit to reduce violence and rapes against women in Mexico City.
